" Phntasy…can become a source of pleasure for the hearers and spectators at the performance of writer's work. The paper seeks to analyse how the theological arcana of religious mysticism associated with the divine figure of Shiva has been transformed into a humanistic mythography by the author of the trilogy, Amish Tripathi, and seeks to reconsider the conceptual paradigms underpinning the trilogy by critically synthesizing two prominent modes of theistic philosophy in India: Vedanta and Kashmir Shaivism. Such an instance of humanistic mysticism developed through innovative mythologies is Amish Tripathi ’s The Shiva Trilogy, based on the reconstruction of several Indian mythical characters and stories drawn from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Shiva Purana. Thus, literary articulations of mysticism render it closer to human imagination and the mythologies which develop out of this articulation bring forth the human elements in the divine. ![]() However, even in religious literature, we see a humanistic amalgamation of mystic impulses and the (literary)will-to-communicate. The traditional attitude towards mysticism centres round its association with religious sentiments, hence it often seems problematic to associate mysticism with secular literature. ![]() ![]() ![]() Powell later reprised the role in the ITV series Hannay which ran for 13 episodes from 1988 to 1989. It is known for the Big Ben sequence near the end, inspired by the film My Learned Friend (1943) starring Will Hay, although this is its most fundamental deviation from Buchan's original story, which reaches its culmination in a coastal location in Kent. It also introduces a different meaning for the "thirty-nine steps", although unlike its filmed predecessors it returns to Buchan's original notion of being an actual staircase. The early events and overall feel of the film bear much resemblance to Buchan's original story, albeit with a few changes such as the re-casting of Scudder as a more immediately sympathetic character and the introduction of a love interest. ![]() ![]() It is generally regarded as the closest to the novel, being set before the Great War. This version of Buchan's tale starred Robert Powell as Richard Hannay, Karen Dotrice as Alex, John Mills as Colonel Scudder, and a host of other well-known British actors in smaller parts. It was the third film version of the 1915 novel. Lucretius is often overlooked by Classicists, who are put off by the technical detail of Epicurean natural philosophy, and he is also frequently ignored by philosophers, who may mine his poetry for supporting evidence of Epicurean doctrine but not much else. ![]() In this seminar, we will read all of Lucretius’ only known poetic work, the De Rerum Natura, a beautiful exposition of Epicurean philosophy in verse (with a heavy focus on Epicurean physics). The narrator is never named, and Jeffers is neither seen nor contextualised. Where the Outline trilogy centred the act of listening – the narrator often receding while the people she met recounted the details of their lives – Second Place re-establishes a more singular viewpoint, taking the form of either a letter or a slightly breathless address to someone called Jeffers. ![]() Second Place, it turns out, is a novel less about property, and more about the boundaries and misplaced emotional investment for which property is a proxy. ![]() This is, however, a Cusk novel, and in Cusk novels the surface, as experienced by reader and characters alike, invariably proves too fragile to be trusted. On the surface, then, this is a novel of glaring privilege, steeped in a mode of middle-class existence so rarified that the “lower things” must never be allowed to intrude. Now the narrator invites artists to use it as a kind of retreat, or, as she puts it, “a home for the things that weren’t already here – the higher things”. With the help of a group of men “who all help one another when there’s physical work to be done”, the cottage on the property was renovated. The narrator and her husband bought it “to prevent it from being misused”, or to put it another way, to prevent any disturbance to the boundaries of their idyll. The Second Place began as a “parcel of wasteland” adjoining the main property. ![]() ![]() ![]() Olympus that they just start making trouble.
